Deepa Mehta completes her trilogy on natural elements with her new offering after the critical success of '1947-Earth' and 'Fire'. The film is set in pre-independence era and highlights the oppression of widows through an emotional love story. Mehta's bold attempt on the plight of widows faced the wrath and ire of Hindu fundamentalists forcing her to change her shooting venue to Sri Lanka. Like '1947-Earth' and 'Fire', this film challenges cultural backwardness and religious intolerance. The film promises path- breaking performances from actors like Seema Biswas, Lisa Ray, John Abraham and Baby Sarala in leading roles. The film has the backdrop set in the 1930s where it focuses on the plight of a group of widows forced into poverty at a temple in the holy city of Varanasi. It centers on a relationship between one of the widows (Lisa Ray), who wants to escape the social restrictions imposed on widows and falls for the charm of a man (John Abraham) who is from a lower caste and follower of Mahatma Gandhi. A.R Rehman has been nominated for "Best Original Song" for "Aayo Re Sakhi" along with "Luka Chupi" ('Rang De Basanti') in the Grammy Awards. Both Rehman and Mehta haver preferred soft and instrumental harmonious rendition for the musical scores in the album that echoes pain, ecstasy and suffering of the characters. The music album of 'Water' has six original soundtracks that can be heard on Sony BMG music cassettes and CD's.

what are we Indians beaming about regarding Water ? Where is our participation in the whole event ? I will tell you. The participation was in those protests that rose from different parts of India, so that the shooting for this film could be permanently stopped. There is nothing in this film that we can be proud of. Yes, the only thing we can do, is to view the movie instead of banning it, as done in some parts of India.

I have seen the movie recently. It's beautiful, touching and seems perfect. most of the actors gave their best performances. But I found Liza Ray very dumb in that role. Neither did her eyes speak, nor did her face.

water is a good movie..It depicts the terrible damage that can be done to the human spirit when chauvinistic religious rules and texts are treated as sacrosanct. The inhumane treatment of widows in India by Hindu fundamentalists is similar to the subjugation of women by fundamentalist Christians, Jews, and Muslims elsewhere. It is appalling to see religion used to deny the dignity and rights of women. Deepa Mehta has done all women an immense service by making this extraordinary film about the liberation their sisters yearn for with their hearts, minds, bodies, and souls.
