Accents on keyboard

For one of those strange and mysterious reasons I will never be able to understand my cordless keyboard has decided to go on a partial strike of accents and, as a result, when I write in Spanish or Frenc (where accents are abundant) I cannot write them

The accents I mean are: ^^ ``´´¨¨ which I can, obviously write separately as it can be seen, but I want to write them on any vowel theycome out like this: ´´a; ¨¨u; etc.; that is, normally I was clicking on the needed accent and then on the vowel I wanted it to appear, and that was that. Not anymore.

What am I doing wrong?

Can someone enlighten me as to what I should do. I have a Dell PC, 2 years old, and I'm using Windows XP.
