Geoffrey Chaucer
(c. 1343 - Oct. 25, 1400)
Chaucer is often credited as being the first author to demonstrate the artistic credibility of the English language (as opposted to the more intellectual French and Latin of his time). While there is very little documentation concerning his early life, his later life and writing, which includes over 500 separate works, are well documented. He is believed to have studied law and been a member of Edward III's court. Any mentions of him disappear from historical records around 1400. He is presumed to have died of old age, although many hold with the theory that he was murdered by one of Edward III's rivals. _________________ Roland Camilleri
