Timor-Leste votes new Parliament.
DILI, Timor-Leste (UPI) -- Timor-Leste voters went to the polls Saturday to elect new parliament amid hopes a change in government would bring stability, it was reported.
"Whichever party wins will be good for Timor if it's peaceful and everybody accepts the verdict of the nation," said former Prime Minister and newly elected President Jose Ramos Horta.
The ruling Fretilin party and the new National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction party, led by former President Xanana Gusmao, were dueling over the seats in Parliament, Voice of America said.
Last year, a third of the residents of the capital city Dili were forced into makeshift refugee camps after fighting between security forces turned into gang warfare.
Since then, security in the country has been overseen by an Australian-led international peacekeeping force.A
