While we don't know who will be playing in the World Series - OK, we know it won't be the Cubs - we still can prepare ourselves for the Fall Classic with a look at some more of the top World Series and baseball sites on the Web.

BLACK SOX

Anyone infuriated by steroid allegations in today's game shouldn't think scandal is exclusive to today's game. Check out the 1919 World Series as reference. The Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the World Series to make a few extra bucks. Visit 1919blacksox.com for a closer look at the historic series, which resulted in a lifetime ban for one of baseball's greatest players, Shoeless Joe Jackson.

'FIELD OF DREAMS'

Speaking of Joe Jackson, any chance to reference Kevin Costner's corny-yet-effective "Field of Dreams" shouldn't be missed. Of course, if the only exposure you have to the film is each spring when TBS runs it with approximately 142 commercial interruptions, you might want to check out the DVD, especially if you want your wife to see you cry.

WORLD SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

Want to know about Major League Baseball's premier event but don't feel like reading an encyclopedic tome about the event? Check out baseballlibrary.com. Starting with the first series, the Baseball Library's Web site does a nice job of summarizing some of the top World Series of the past century.

SERIES EARTHQUAKE

The 1989 World Series featured the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants, two teams separated by mere miles. While the proximity of the teams was noteworthy enough, what will make the series memorable was the earthquake that hit during the pre-game festivities before game 3. Hitting 6.9 on the Richter scale, the earthquake caused the death of 69 people and caused millions of dollars in damages. The series itself was postponed for 10 days, giving the Bay area a chance to grieve and regroup.

BASEBALL RATINGS
http://www.baseball-almanac.com/ws/wstv.shtml
Although big bucks are spent by television networks each year for the right to broadcast the Fall Classic, the declining number of viewers may be cause for alarm for Major League Baseball and networks alike. After all, how can American viewers be expected to watch another World Series game when Nick at Night is running repeats of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"?
